Brain injury caused by insufficient oxygen delivery to the brain. Newborns with this condition have an abnormal physical exam and are at risk for seizures.

Common Questions

What is the treatment for this problem?

Whole-body cooling helps limit the inflammation of the brain after the low-oxygen injury. This lasts for 72 hours.

What kind of imaging will my baby have?

Within the first week of life, babies who undergo cooling will have a brain MRI to help give a long-term prognosis.

Will my baby be okay?

The physical exam, brain MRI, and EEG will give information about how your baby may do long-term. Time will be the true test. As your baby is expected to meet certain developmental milestones, it will become evident how much, if any, the low-oxygen delivery injured the brain.
